Having not eaten at Ruben’s for 2 or 3 years we were pleasantly reminded how enjoyable it is as a dinner venue. Unlike many local restaurants it is open a good range of hours and days, serves generous, hearty and tasty meals and offers a decent range of wines. About Us
Our Story
Rubens sits on Main Road, on the stretch between Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, and it has been feeding travellers and locals from that spot for a very long time. The Swiss Italian families who arrived for the gold rush in the 1850s never really left, and their orchards, terraced gardens and stone walls are still scattered through the hills around Hepburn. Rubens carries on in that tradition quietly. Gnocchi rolled by hand, pizza dough thrown the way it has always been thrown, sauces built from scratch in the kitchen each day.
What brings people back is not complicated. A table on the deck with the hills in front of you when the weather is kind. The log fires when it isn't. Zeppoli at the end that people are still talking about on the drive home. A fair few of our regulars first came in as children and now bring their own.
